The weather is finally getting warmer and soon you could have to turn over to your air conditioner. Along with arranging your annual air conditioner service with the team at West Jefferson Plumbing and Heating, Inc., there are a few other items you can do to remain cozy and save money throughout the year.
During the in-between season in West Jefferson, those far too few spring temperatures, you likely use ceiling fans to keep cool. Did you know that operating your ceiling fan along with your air conditioner might not only keep you more comfy during the warmer days, but also save you money? In order to do that you have to make sure you’re using ceiling fans and your air conditioning properly. Here’s a couple things to keep in mind:
Raise Your Thermostat
This is where the cost savings can potentially come in. If you aren’t raising your thermostat you won’t be saving any money. Raising your thermostat by even a couple degrees, in addition to running your ceiling fan, shouldn’t impact your comfort level very much. For every degree you raise your temperature, you’re lowering the duration of the “on” cycle of your air conditioner.
Adjust Air Direction
Ceiling fans have a clockwise and counterclockwise setting to adjust dependent on the season. During the warmer months you’ll want to be sure the air is blowing down. You can stand below the fan to see if you feel a breeze. If you don’t, adjust the direction. Ceiling fans do not actually lower the temperature of the air, but they make you feel cooler. It’s the wind chill effect. You’ll feel cooler than the temperature on the thermostat.
Turn Off Fan When You’re Not There
Treat your ceiling fan like they are lights, turn it off when leaving a room. If no one is in the room to take in the wind chill that a fan provides you’re wasting energy by operating your fan. Don’t forget, a fan doesn’t actually cool your air, it just moves your air.
