Adding a Gas Appliance? The Existing Gas Line May Need to Be Resized

A gas appliance is not connected by finding the nearest pipe and adding a tee. The piping system has to deliver enough gas to every appliance when the connected load is operating, while maintaining the inlet pressure each appliance requires.

That is why a high-input tankless water heater, standby generator, pool heater, range or larger furnace can change more than the final branch line.

Add the connected appliance loads

Gas piping is sized from appliance input, fuel, supply pressure, pipe material, length and allowable pressure drop. Ohio's residential fuel-gas provisions state that the system must meet maximum demand and that connected hourly input is the basis for sizing unless an approved diversity method applies.

A 200,000-Btu/h tankless heater added to a system that already serves a furnace, fireplace and range can exceed the capacity of the meter, regulator, trunk or branch. The appliance may light under light demand and fail when multiple loads operate.

Pipe length and fittings matter

Capacity decreases as the run gets longer and pressure is lost through pipe and fittings. The same nominal pipe size can support different loads depending on the sizing method and developed length.

Corrugated stainless steel tubing uses manufacturer-specific tables and may require bonding and protection details. Black steel, copper where permitted and polyethylene outside have different rules. Materials are not interchangeable by appearance.

The utility side may need coordination

The gas utility controls the service and meter. A project may require confirmation of meter capacity, delivery pressure or a service upgrade. On propane, tank, regulator and vaporization capacity matter, especially in cold weather.

Coordinate these items before the appliance installation date.

Testing is part of the installation

New and modified piping must be tested by the applicable approved method, and appliances may need to be isolated from test pressure. Current Ohio utility rules also require testing before initial or reestablished gas service.

Never look for a leak with a flame. If you smell gas, leave the area, avoid switches and ignition sources, and contact the gas utility or emergency services from a safe location.

Permits and combustion requirements

Local permit and inspection requirements vary by jurisdiction and project. Gas-fired equipment also needs approved venting, combustion air, clearances and condensate disposal where applicable. Adequate pipe capacity does not make an unsafe vent system acceptable.

Frequently asked questions

Can I reuse the old water-heater gas line for tankless?

Only if a sizing calculation shows that the branch, trunk, meter and pressure are adequate for the new input and other connected appliances.

Why does the appliance work until the furnace starts?

That pattern can indicate pressure drop or insufficient shared piping capacity, though regulators, controls and appliance faults are also possible.

Does a standby generator need a separate gas line?

It needs a correctly sized connection and coordinated meter or propane capacity. Whether the physical route is separate depends on the approved design.
