Why Is My Sump Pump Running Constantly?

A sump pump can run nearly continuously during a severe rain event and still be doing its job. The important question is whether the water level in the pit is dropping.

If the pump runs and the level holds steady near the top—or continues to rise—the system is not gaining ground. That requires prompt attention.

Start with the water level

Observe from a safe, dry location:

  • Does the pump start when the float rises?
  • Does the water level fall while the pump runs?
  • Does water rush back into the pit when the pump stops?
  • Is the incoming flow unusually strong?
  • Does the exterior discharge have visible flow?

Do not reach into a wet pit while equipment is energized.

Heavy groundwater may exceed capacity

During prolonged rain or rapid snowmelt, foundation drains can deliver water continuously. A correctly operating pump may need long cycles. If inflow exceeds the pump's capacity at the actual discharge height, the level will rise.

Pump ratings depend on head—the vertical lift and piping resistance—not just the largest gallons-per-hour number on the box.

The discharge may be sending water back

A failed or missing check valve can let water in the discharge pipe fall back into the pit after every cycle. An exterior outlet too close to the foundation can send pumped water back through the soil and footing drain. A buried or surface line can be clogged, crushed or frozen.

Public flood guidance recommends keeping the discharge unobstructed and directing water away from the foundation where drainage allows. Local stormwater rules determine approved discharge locations.

Float and pump problems

A stuck float can hold the switch on. Debris can obstruct the intake or impeller. An aging motor may run without moving its rated volume. An incorrectly selected pump may not match the pit and piping.

If the pump is hot, noisy, cycling rapidly or failing to lower the level, call before it stops completely.

The pit may reveal a property drainage issue

A sump pump treats collected water. It does not correct negative grading, short downspouts, failed footing drains or a high seasonal water table. Evaluate the exterior source when the pump's workload changes dramatically.

Should I unplug a pump that runs constantly?

Not while water is entering the pit unless there is an electrical hazard or a professional directs you. Unplugging the only working pump can allow immediate flooding.

Why does the pump run every minute?

Possible causes include high inflow, check-valve backflow, a small basin, float position or discharge recirculation. Observe the water movement and have the system evaluated.

Would a bigger pump solve it?

Only if capacity is the verified limit and the discharge can handle the added flow. An oversized pump in a small pit can short-cycle and fail sooner.
