Snowstorms and Air Conditioners

March 17, 2016

We haven’t completely made it through winter in West Jefferson just yet. Mother Nature has provided us with a few nice days, but she’s always prepped to remind us that she’s in charge. So when she does finally let up and it starts to warm up, read below so you won’t want to have to unexpectedly call us for out for air conditioner service.

Heavy snowfall could bury your air conditioner in the snow, hurting its performance when the temperatures start to warm up for the season. Not to mention it can hinder a high-efficiency system from operating as such. The situation could become an even greater problem too if you don’t prepare for it with an annual air conditioner service appointment.

There are preparations you can do as a homeowner to help your air conditioner run properly even though snow has fallen or could fall in the upcoming days and weeks.

  1. Maintain a 3-foot/1-meter clearance around your air conditioner. Inspect the area regularly to ensure that it stays clear and that there are no snow drifts or piles of debris that could have piled up throughout the winter.
  2. Contrary to what you may think, covering your air conditioner could end up doing more damage than you’d expect. A covered air conditioner could be inviting for rodents looking for shelter from the weather and start to call it home, leading to damage to the system as they roam about.

While the weather in West Jefferson will more than likely go up and down over the last few days of cold weather, you can’t count out the chance of weather that can impact the performance of your air conditioner. At West Jefferson Plumbing and Heating, Inc. in West Jefferson, we are always available to take a look at any areas around your home or answer any of your questions, whether they’re in regards to air conditioner service or purchasing a new system.
