Is it Time for Furnace Service or Replacement?

When winter comes and we start taking calls about furnaces that aren't producing heat, the majority of them can be tracked back to irregular furnace service and maintenance. If furnace concerns are not handled, your system may suddenly stop operating and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are some warning signs you can be on the lookout for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system quits working.

Furnace Age

The normal life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's a good idea to start furnace shopping now. Buying a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make in a hurry. Give yourself enough time to research and weigh all of your options.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they get older and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been correctly maintained. Think of the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that you could spend on a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last couple years of a furnace's life are when your system encounters the most breakdowns. Start adding up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the last two years - a new system might be a better option.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any strange noises coming from your system? Furnaces start making odd noises near the end of their lifespan. If your furnace is switching on and off frequently or blowing chilly air, it's time to look at getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home efficiently. Your home can start feeling stuffy and anyone in the home with allergies could notice an uptick in their symptoms. Some other indicators are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.

If any of these indicators sound like what you are experiencing with your furnace, it may be time to start researching a new system.
