Why Does My Well Water Smell Like Rotten Eggs?

The first question I ask is simple: does the smell occur in hot water only, or in both hot and cold water?

That one observation can prevent a homeowner from buying treatment for the wrong part of the system.

If only the hot water smells

The water heater is the likely source. Hydrogen sulfide can be produced by sulfur bacteria in the tank or by a reaction involving sulfate in the water and a magnesium anode rod. The Minnesota Department of Health describes both mechanisms.

Possible professional solutions include disinfecting and flushing the heater, using a compatible anode made from another material or installing a powered anode. Simply removing the anode can shorten tank life, so preserve corrosion protection.

Do not raise the heater to a disinfection temperature without manufacturer guidance and scald protection. Very hot water can cause severe injury.

If hot and cold water smell

The source may be the well, groundwater, plumbing or treatment equipment. Let both taps run and compare fixtures connected before and after a softener or filter when safely accessible. The pattern helps locate where the odor begins.

Hydrogen sulfide can occur naturally or be produced by sulfur bacteria. Activated carbon may help at low concentrations, but small cartridges can exhaust quickly. Other measured conditions may call for oxidation, aeration, chlorination and filtration.

Do not choose media by odor alone.

Test for health-related contaminants separately

Smell is not a complete safety test. CDC recommends that private wells be tested at least annually for total coliforms, nitrates, total dissolved solids and pH, with local guidance for additional contaminants. Test when taste, color or odor changes.

A well can smell unpleasant and meet tested health limits, or smell normal and contain a contaminant that has no odor. Use a state-certified laboratory.

Why temporary fixes often fail

Shock chlorination can reduce bacteria but may not correct the condition that allowed them to return. A carbon cartridge may adsorb odor until it becomes saturated. Replacing an anode with the same reactive material may reproduce the smell.

A lasting plan identifies the source, concentration, water chemistry, flow rate and maintenance requirement.

Is sulfur odor dangerous?

The common household odor often does not indicate sanitary contamination, but high airborne hydrogen-sulfide concentrations can be hazardous and rare pollution sources are possible. Test the water and do not enter confined well spaces.

Will a water softener remove sulfur odor?

A conventional cation-exchange softener is designed for hardness, not as a universal hydrogen-sulfide system. The correct treatment depends on testing.

Why did the smell return after shocking the well?

Bacteria can re-establish, treatment equipment can reseed the system, or the odor may originate in the heater rather than the well.
